Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 2 has finally started airing. It is a romantic comedy that follows Kazuya Kinoshita and his life filled with rental girlfriends. It has a unique premise, making it one of the first to tackle the concept of renting a girlfriend. However, it has plenty of downsides; but it might also be decent for some of you. Therefore, here are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t watch Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 2 (and 5 reasons why you should).
1. WATCH: Some arcs are well-written

The upcoming arc is something to look forward to in the anime. It contains scenes that will both melt and break your heart. What will happen is Kazuya and Mizuhara will make a special movie. This helps in achieving Mizuhara’s dream of her grandmother seeing her become an actress. However, they have to undergo several difficulties to make the movie happen. The arc is also a rollercoaster filled with emotions. Hence, if you want to watch the upcoming arc – you better be ready to shed a few tears.
2. DON’T WATCH: It will all get repetitive

Despite some arcs being well-written, it will drag on at some point. The manga is currently 240+ chapters long, but most of it felt stretched out. There will come a time when nothing major will happen for so long to the point where it gets frustrating. You might just question if the author decided to prolong the manga just for the sake of it. So if you do not want to watch the same thing repeatedly, then this season might not be for you.
3. WATCH: The rental girlfriends

This is for the people who have crushes on the girls of the series. There is nothing wrong with watching a series for certain characters. Nevertheless, the characters of this series might just make it worth watching. Ichinose is still your typical tsundere with a soft, caring side. Ruka is a dedicated, cheerful girlfriend who is quite clingy. Mami is sweet but tends to become manipulative at times. And Sumi is just that overly shy and innocent girl. Some of them are pretty likable, so we cannot blame you if you watch the anime for them.
4. DON’T WATCH: Too much fan service

This is one of the major problems of the series overall. The fan service and lewdness are just too much to bear. It becomes so pathetic that manga readers think that it ruined the entire series. Due to the amount of fan service, the girls of the series tend to become mere objects of desire and nothing else. They are treated as achievements for the main character to obtain. We should keep in mind even if they are fictional, women should not be depicted as subjects for men’s pleasure.
5. WATCH: The plot is unique

It is not every day that you see a story that contains rental girlfriends. This concept might be the reason why people watched and read the series in the first place. Although other harem animes do exist, this one was able to put its own twist on it. It is also paired with surprises and drama every now and then. Like it or not, the premise of this series made it something worth checking out for an episode or two.
6. DON’T WATCH: The main character has no development

Another frustration most fans have is the lack of development for Kazuya. After 20+ chapters, Kazuya is still the same sad boy, wimp, and failure that he is in the first few chapters. Seriously, if the main character is not even likable, then the whole series might not become likable at all. Don’t get me wrong, Kazuya does have his moments. But every time he does something manly, he immediately takes it back by doing something wimpy. It is always one step forward, two steps backward.
7. WATCH: A new girl will be introduced

The second season might introduce another girl into the fray, Mini Yaemori. She is an optimistic but childish girl who will help Kazuya in the future. Furthermore, she is also a neighbor of both Kazuya and Ichinose. To add, she is also a Youtuber and a streamer on Nicolive and Twitcasting. She likes to cosplay, making it the entire theme of her streaming career. At some point, she will even consider Kazuya her master. If you want to meet Mini, then you have to watch the 2nd season or read the manga.
8. DON’T WATCH: Old girls are underutilized

The old girls do not have the best character arcs in the future. Ruka’s character might just become annoying for the watcher, as she mainly acts as a hindrance between Kazuya and Ichinose. Sumi also only gets minimal screentime, showing up mainly when Kazuya needs something from her. Mami also has a questionable reveal that may make her look petty to most people. Overall, the girls that you may have liked in the first season might not get their time in the spotlight.
9. WATCH: Good for rom-com fans

If you are just looking for another rom-com, then it might be okay for you to watch it. This series is not for anyone, but if you are not taking it seriously – it may be for you. The show does have romantic moments that can make your heart race. It also has some parts that can make you laugh and giggle a little bit. To sum up, if you are into romcoms, then you might find the 2nd season fairly decent.
10. DON’T WATCH: Cringe

Some of you might disagree with this, but there will also be people who will agree. Many scenes will just leave you scratching your head and questioning the characters’ actions. Several situations could have been avoided if the characters used some common sense. After watching this series, it might just give you a lot of secondhand embarrassment and regrets.
And that’s pretty much it! Hopefully, we helped you decide whether or not to watch the new season. If you still want to watch it, you may stream Rent-a-Girlfriend at Crunchyroll. if your region allows it, you may also stream it on the Muse Asia YouTube channel.
