As a fan of anime, you have most likely experienced the death of a loved character, feeling the heartwrenching sensation of loss and sadness. While there are many more sad deaths, these are our chosen 5 for this article. Disclaimer: This article has spoilers about character deaths. 

5. Kaori Miyazono – Your Lie in April

Kaori Miyazono is a talented, free-spirited violinist who suffers from a terminal disease. In the series, Kaori dies towards the end due to complications from a surgery she had previously, and her death is a major event in the story, contributing to the development of the main character. 

4. Maes Hughes – Fullmetal Alchemist

Maes Hughes dies in a heartwrenching twist, killed by a mysterious assassin. His death deeply affects the characters, and his funeral is sorrowful and emotional. His scene is one of the most significant moments in the series, serving as a reminder of the harsh realities of war and sacrifice. 

3. Mami Tomoe – Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Mami Tomoe is a magical girl who has been fighting against witches. In her character’s death episode, she goes on a witch-hunting mission and ends up encountering a powerful witch with multiple familiars. Mami transforms into her magical girl form and begins her attack but gets ambushed. While severely injured, the witch bites her head off and kills her instantly.

2. Jiraiya – Naruto Shippuden

One of the saddest deaths in the anime Naruto, if not the saddest. Jiraya is killed during his mission to infiltrate the hidden rain village and gather information about the Akatsuki. In a fight against the leader of Atsuki, Pain, Jiraya was defeated after putting up a fearless effort. Contributing to the heartwrenching moment, in the end Jiraya finds out that Pain was his former student Nagato and gets fatally stabbed by him.

1. Ace – One Piece

Ace was captured by the Marines and sentenced to execution for being the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Luffy and his crew fought to rescue him but were ultimately unsuccessful and Ace was killed by Marine Admiral Akainu before his scheduled execution. His death is a major event in the series as it had a profound impact on Luffy and the rest of the characters, leading to major developments in the story.
