From his deathbed, Hero-King Inglis’s last wish is to live again as a warrior. Awakening he realizes that he’s been reborn as a girl to a noble family. Even when rejected from the knighthood. She sets out to be the most Extraordinary Squire there ever was.
Hero-King Becomes a Little Girl
The episode begins on Inglis’s deathbed. He is surrounded by people who are saddened. After a few words he closes his eyes. Inglis is then visited by the Goddess Alistia. She offers him a reward of anything he wishes to the best of her ability.
His response is to be reborn, not for any regrets about having lived his current path. Yet to be able to pursue the path he left behind when he gained his position as Hero-King. To which she grants as he finally passes, sending his soul to the far future. There he has been reborn as a baby girl.
Upon realizing that his body is that of a girl he freaks out. Once left alone she tries to feel the aether & mentions that she can’t feel the Goddesses. While Inglis is floating the city comes under attack by flying beasts. Her mother, Serena, rushes back to the room & catches Inglis floating briefly. Then plays it off as seeing things, bringing her focus back to evacuating to the caste.
The whole time Inglis is fascinated with the idea of these beasts being a challenge for her. Upon arriving at the castle, Serena meets up with Irina. They head inside to the other children. There we meet Rafael & his sister Rafinha, who is the same age as Inglis.
Runes & Magicite Beast
Rafael is frustrated, as he wants to fight as well since he has received a Rune but is only watching. We learn that a Rune is necessary to handle an Artifact. A weapon that can fight against Magicite Beasts & every knight has it engraved on their body.
His mother begins to tell him that his Rune is a special-class & that he’s the chosen one. It’s only given to those who can be the hope of the people & they can’t afford to lose him here. She tells him he must survive even if it means abandoning everyone there.
Suddenly a magicite beast barges in through the window. Rafael’s mother is unconscious as Serena rushes over. As she checks on them Serena takes Rafinha from Irina’s arms. When Rafael is about to fight, Serena lunges forward placing the baby girls in his arms & sending him back. She takes up a blade & tells him to escape with the girls.
He places the girls behind a barricade of furniture. Refusing to simply run away he returns to fight alongside Serena. Inglis acknowledges that he has the spirit to be a hero. It doesn’t take long for them to be thrown against the wall & knocked unconscious. Inglis then intervenes to keep them from dying. Rafael sees it but is only barely conscious for a brief moment before passing back out. Inglis also passes out from exhausting himself. Waking briefly she overhears her parents talking about a Prismer. To which interests Inglis as she falls back asleep.
5 Years Later
Inglis is admiring herself in the mirror. She states that she had always wanted a granddaughter like this. Irina & Serena talk about her. Rafinha then talks to Inglis about their training. Transitioning over to see the knights training.
Rafinha attempts to swing a wooden sword only to fall. Inglis comes to check on her & advises her to stand properly like the others. They then watch a 13 year old Rafael in a mock battle. Rafinha admires her brother’s skills.
Shortly after, the Rambach merchant came to spar with the knights. Rambach introduces his son, Rahl. At first he appears to be timid & mild mannered. Once the sparring begins he defeats 10 knights & starts to show his true nature.
Only Inglis seems to know what is really going on during Rahl’s matches. It appears that in this era people have little to no knowledge about magic. During the next match, Rahl knocks a knight’s sword from his hands, sending it towards Rafinha. Inglis catches it before it could harm her.
Rahl mocks the knights & is challenged by Rafael. Inglis then advises him not to look at Rahl as much as possible. Since she can’t really mention anything about magic she just gives him a hint. Rafael does well but messes up at the last moment.
A Prodigy in the Family
Rafinha is sad that her brother lost, so Inglis tells her that she’ll avenge him. As Rahl mocks Rafael, Inglis walks up and challenges him. At first he refuses, but she threatens to expose him so he agrees.
Her father, Luke, & Rafael try to talk her out of it. Yet she manages to persuade her father into approving by threatening to tell mother about the urn. Rahl attempts to use his trick again, but it is countered by the aether Inglis uses.
Inglis states that it wouldn’t be fun if she used aether to fight. So she uses pure swordsmanship instead. She closes her eyes as the match begins. During which she easily deflects Rahl’s advances. While watching her father questions if they could have a prodigy in their family. Rafael is amazed & his sister is happily cheering. Inglis then deals the winning blow which has Rahl give in. Rahl looks back at her furious about the loss as the episode ends.
My Thoughts on the Episode
I don’t feel like there is too much to say about this first episode. The pacing is decent & feels like it went by too quickly when you reach the ending. Which makes it pretty good at drawing you in. The art style is pleasant to look at & the music fits well with the series. There will likely be 1 or 2 more episodes that will time skip like this one if we are to reach the age where the main story begins.
Rahl will probably cause trouble somewhere down the line & still be sour about being beat by a little girl. There are some questions to be answered, like why people seem to be oblivious to others using magic, the Goddess not being felt & when did these Rune’s and beasts begin. I’m sure some of this will be answered before the season is out.
I’m looking forward to how this all plays out. Overall I’d likely give this episode a 5.5 out of 10. See you all again for the next episode.
