Suzu Kanade was buying food as usual, but this time she was unaware of the presence stalking her through the trees. But this presence was not an ordinary creature because in this world, Ayakashi -also known as Yokai by many, exists. The malevolent Ayakashi could only be defeated by people who could see and fight them. These people were called Exorcist Ninjas. As Suzu settled down to eat her snack, a cat-like Ayakashi was planning to consume her, but before the cat could leap off the tree, a boy showed up and bickered with it.
Suzu noticed the commotion and snatched the cat away from the boy named Matsuri Kazamaki. The cat’s name was Shirogane, and Suzu believed it was harmless despite being warned by Matsuri to stay away from the Ayakashi. After the bickering between Suzu and Matsuri, Suzu stated that she would leave Shirogane in a distant place instead of Matsuri killing it. She hinted that Matsuri was not like this in the past before riding her bike away with Shirogane.
Shirogane asked if Matsuri and Suzu were close, to which Suzu answered that they were once close. As a child, Suzu was bullied for being able to see Ayakashi, and people would often call her a liar and creepy. Because of this, Suzu does not have any friends. This was until Matsuri showed up and played with her and the Ayakashi around them. But when Matsuri announced that he would be learning about the Kazamaki family job, Matsuri almost became a different person and would always chase away any Ayakashi that would come close to Suzu.
Meanwhile, in a forest near an area where accidents were prone, Matsuri was fighting a spider Ayakashi. He asked the Ayakashi if he was the reason why there were too many accidents happening in that specific area, but the creature did not answer and attacked him instead. Matsuri used his skills as a member of the Kazamaki family, who uses wind as their weapon when fighting the Ayakashis. He easily defeated the creature, and when the spider Ayakashi talked and said that it would kill Matsuri, the exorcist ninja finished his job and killed it.
King of Ayakashi
Back to Suzu and Shirogane, the two reached a shrine where Shirogane found out that Suzu was in love with Matsuri. The Ayakashi was disturbed by this fact, and it swears that Suzu and Matsuri would not end up with each other. Matsuri reported the details of his previous job to his grandpa Seigen and mentioned his confusion with how Suzu was acting. When he told that Suzu was with a cat-like Ayakashi called Shirogane, his grandfather was so shocked he hurt himself. Seigen explained how talented Matsuri is, but he still lacks the perception of how powerful an Ayakashi is. Seigen explained to Matsuri that there was once a powerful Ayakashi that was worshipped by people in the past, and they called him the King of Ayakashi, who turned out to be Shirogane.
In the shrine, Suzu was rubbing Shirogane’s belly as the Ayakashi was explaining that he was, in fact, the king. Shirogane felt the slip of Suzu’s power in her fingers and mentioned that Suzu was an Ayakashi Medium. Then there was a flashback on how Matsuri became an Exorcist Ninja. Seigen explained to him that Suzu would attract many Ayakashi just by being a medium, and in the future, she might attract strong Ayakashi that would want to devour her to strengthen their power. Matsuri swears that he will protect Suzu and fight any Ayakashi that will try and eat his friend. Suzu asked Shirogane if Matsuri knew that she was a medium, and the king said yes before attempting to eat the girl.
But before he could continue, Matsuri showed up and attacked Shirogane. After a few strikes, Matsuri’s sword broke, and it was now evident how powerful Shirogane was. Matsuri used one of his abilities passed down to the Kazamaki family, and Shirogane acknowledged the power that exceeds this family. With his ability, Matsuri managed to lift and trap Shirogane inside a wind sphere, but they knew it was not enough to defeat the king. He pulled out the scroll given to him by his grandfather that contained the accumulated power of Seigen to seal Shirogane.
He turned to a girl?!
Not wanting to see Matsuri and Suzu flirting when he was captured, Shirogane placed a spell on Matsuri, turning him into a girl before escaping in a weakened state. (This scene was hilarious because Shirogane was eager to not let Suzu and Matsuri end up together. Despite getting close to being sealed, his priority is to stop the two from flirting. What’s wrong with this cat?!) Suzu could not believe that Matsuri had a big boo- a girl now. As Shirogane walked away, he was satisfied with casting a spell on Matsuri despite losing most of his spiritual energy, and he swears that he would devour Suzu soon. Seigen was amazed at how strong Shirogane was and how there was a spell he did not know the cure of. For now, Suzu would help Matsuri with his girl problems!
Episode 1 of this anime was interesting, and despite having a theme that was already well-known in the community, it still managed to put a unique tone in the yokai genre. It was also surprisingly funny! The graphics and animation were great, and the opening and ending themes were both bangers. Ayakashi Triangle is an anime worth the shot, and I hope that throughout the whole season, the story will also progress interestingly.
