Episode 8: Boredom
Previously, we saw a glimpse of Gojou’s true power and why he’s called the strongest jujutsu sorcerer. We also saw a group comprising of Cursed Spirits – Geto, Hanami, Jogo, a squid-like being, and Mahito — plotting to attack on October 31st to subdue Gojou entirely.
Our episode begins with a scene of two students from the Kyoto Sister school — Mai and Todo — showing up. Mai is Zenin’s twin sister. So from now on, since they’re both technically “Zenin”, I’ll refer to Mai as Mai and “Zenin” as Maki (their first names).
Regardless, Mai is extremely rude and taunts Fushiguro and Kugisaki for Itadori’s death. Meanwhile Todo wants to fight Fushiguro depending on the answer to his question: “What type of woman is your type?”
Fushiguro says he doesn’t care what she looks like as long as her personality and way of life are unshakeable. Todo says this answer is boring, fit for a boring guy, and attacks him.
As Todo beats the living crap out of Gojou, we spot the Kyoto Sister School Principal waiting for a meeting with the Tokyo Principal. Gojou walks in and tells the Kyoto Principal that the Tokyo Principal won’t be arriving anytime soon because Gojou purposefully gave him a wrong schedule.
We learn from their conversation that this Principal is one of the few that rallied for the 1st-years fighting the Womb demon, which inevitably led to Itadori’s death. In addition, Gojou threatens the principal lightly, saying that students are getting stronger and stronger lately, and he and the rest of the higher ups should watch out if he doesn’t want them to eventually revolt. Throughout this episode, we get hints towards an “incident” last year with Geto involving Todo from the Kyoto school. We also learn that the Kyoto Principal’s assistant is a huge fan of Gojou.
We see the 2nd-years interfere with Todo beating Fushiguro and Maki Zenin interfere with her sister beating up Kugisaki. We see Inumaki’s cool “Cursed Voice” technique, which has effects whenever he says anything that isn’t an onigiri topping/ingredient. We also see that Todo is extremely disappointed in Fushiguro’s fighting abilities.
Finally, we get a bit of insight on Maki Zenin. Despite being one of the strongest 2nd years at Jujutsu Tech, she can’t use Cursed Energy at all. She can’t even see curses unless she’s wearing her glasses. This is in juxtaposition to Mai Zenin from the Kyoto school, who can only use Cursed Energy, and not cursed objects like Maki does.
Kugisaki says she admires Maki Zenin, and it seems like their bond has deepened a bit.
Our final sequence shows 1 month later from this incident, likely sometime before the Kyoto competition. Mahito kills 3 teenage boys in a theater by crushing their skulls somehow, and walks out of the cinema only for a teenage boy to run after him and ask if he did it. Mahito smirks and asks if the teenager can see him. Finally, we see Itadori tasked with checking out the situation as he slowly enters the cinema.
This likely just sets up the next episode.
Opinions / Analysis
Not my favorite episode, but it has its charms! For starters, the scene with the Kyoto Principal was likely my favorite. Watching Gojou threaten him in a very suave manner was extremely cool to watch! Inumaki is also lowkey kinda….
Who the hell does that Principal think he is, anyways? It must be hard for Gojou to contain himself when he’s sitting in front of the man who wanted his own student to die in cold blood.
