Previously on Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, we saw Yuna show off her abilities in her bear outfit to the entirety of the fictional planet of World Fantasy Online. This episode, we meet Fina, as well as get a bit more backstory about Yuna’s situation!
Episode 2: Bear, Meets Little Girl
The story begins as a prequel to the first episode where Yuna narrates how she has become addicted to the video game World Fantasy Online. As Yuna enters the game, we see that her character looks completely different in-game from how it looked in the first episode, with high white pigtails and yellow eyes.
An AI in the game tells Yuna that she has been given a gift by the game developers due to her exceedingly high playtime. Yuna chooses a random chest and gains the infamous Bear Outfit, which she notes is overpowered gear with extremely powerful stats. However, the AI asks Yuna a few questions before she can receive the gift. Yuna admits that she enjoys the fantasy world more than the real world and has never really thought about anyone she cares about in the real world. She only cares about money and finds the bear outfit cute – maybe too cute.
Yuna then finds herself teleported into the game’s world, but she can’t change out of the bear costumes. She also notices that her character, who was max level, has been reset all the way back to level one, causing her to panic.
Just then, a wolf appears and attacks Yuna. Despite her low level, Yuna kills it with relative ease due to the overpowered effects of the bear outfit. She then hears a girl screaming nearby and goes over to help. Yuna throws a rock at a wolf about to eat the girl, killing it and causing the other wolves to flee. The girl introduces herself as Fina, who was out picking medicinal herbs nearby.
Fina leads Yuna to a nearby merchant where they sell the goods from the wolves Yuna killed and Fina butchered. Yuna attempts to split the money with Fina, but she declines. Yuna convinces Fina to take the money in exchange for showing her around town. Gentz, the merchant, tells Fina to take her up on the offer, and so Fina does.
After Fina shows her around town, Yuna goes to a nearby Inn, where she realizes that she can’t leave the game. She shrugs this off, stating that she has no real reason to want to leave, especially if she can earn in-game currency and have it swapped to real-life currency outside the game. The next morning, she goes out and tests all her new abilities to get a feel for her powers.
Yuna attempts to sign up at the guild HQ, meeting Helen for the first time. However, Deboranay, a strong, well-built, mean-looking adventurer chimes in and tells Yuna not to sign up because she’ll smear the adventurer’s good name. Yuna simply punches Deboranay with a “Bear Punch,” knocking him out. Helen allows her to register.
Helen explains to Yuna about the common RPG trope that in order to access higher-level quests, one must level up first. Taking this advice to heart, Yuna quickly dispatches 40 wolves, impressing everyone in the guild.
As Yuna is basking in her newfound fame, Gentz approaches her and asks for a favor. He tells Yuna about Fina, who is struggling to support her family after her father’s death and her mother falling ill. Gentz, who has been a long-time friend of the family, has allowed Fina to do some butchering work on the side for money. However, that work has dried up, and Fina’s family is in dire straits. Gentz implores Yuna to hire Fina as her personal butcher, hoping to give the young girl some much-needed income.
Yuna agrees to Gentz’s request and takes on a quest to hunt higher-ranked wolves, called Tiger-Wolves. She makes a conscious effort to kill them in a way that preserves the valuable materials. However, during her hunt, Yuna notices that one of the Tiger-Wolves is stalking something else. Curious, she checks her minimap and discovers that it’s Fina, who is deep in the woods.
Yuna rushes to Fina’s aid and inadvertently ruins the valuable materials by panicking during the fight. However, despite the setback, Yuna and Fina have a touching heart-to-heart conversation. Yuna asks Fina to team up with her, with Fina taking care of the butchering and Yuna handling the hunting. Fina, grateful for the opportunity, tearfully agrees.
Opinions / Analysis
I have a sneaking feeling that this series is trying to show us some character development from Yuna. So, prior to coming in to this “new world” where Yuna has the Bear suit, she was asked a few questions by the AI:
“Do you have anybody/anything you care about in the real world?”
“Do you believe in a God?”
I believe these questions are 100% indicative of the story Yuna will be going on in this new VR world. Fina is definitely going to be one of the people that Fina will soon care about. However, I’ve got a few questions so far:
- If Yuna can’t log out of the game, how come in Episode 1 we see her successfully leave and take a break from the game? She even takes a phone call from her Grandfather. What happens between Episode 2 and Episode 1?
- Where is Fina in Episode 1?
- If the God wants to teach Yuna a lesson about caring about others, then why is he using an NPC to teach that? If their goal to get Yuna out of the VR world and interactive with those around her, won’t that be counterproductive?
Or maybe I’m misunderstanding this ‘God’s intentions.
