Previously on Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, we saw the introduction of Fina as well as an explanation of how Yuna ended up trapped inside World Fantasy Online. This episode, we get a bit more character development of Yuna!
Episode 3: Bear, Goes on a Rampage
As the episode begins, Yuna changes from her bedtime bear outfit to her regular black bear suit and we see that she’s been hunting a lot of wildlife and monsters in the nearby forests. She brings the carcasses to Fina for butchery, but it turns out that she’s been hunting so much that Fina can’t keep up. Fina also doesn’t want to monopolize the butchery area, which is communal. Yuna feels a bit guilty about this.
Helen sits with Yuna and advises her to ease up on the killing of local monsters, but Yuna is disappointed because there aren’t many other quests available. However, a blonde man named Lanz confronts Yuna, accusing her of punching Deboranay two days ago. Gil and Rulina, Deboranay’s other party members, apologize for Lanz’s behavior and explain that they don’t hold it against Yuna, since Deboranay probably had it coming.
Helen returns to discuss a quest with Gil, Lanz and Rulina, but the party members aren’t confident they can complete it without Deboranay. Helen pushes Yuna to help Rulina, Lanz, and Gil complete the quest. Yuna and Rulina set out to defeat a nest of goblins, with Lanz and Gil staying behind.
Yuna quickly destroys the guards at the entrance of the cave, to the surprise of Rulina. She then sets fire inside and seals it with Bear-Earth-Magic, so that the goblins die of suffocation. One goblin, The Goblin King, proves to be much stronger than the other goblins and attacks Yuna, but she defeats it by creating a large bear-shaped hole for him to fall into, and pierces him with spikes from above. Rulina is impressed, but Yuna declines to learn how to butcher the corpses, revealing her squeamishness.
After they complete the quest, Yuna buys a plot of land with her earnings and builds a bear-themed house for herself, including a butchery room for Fina to use rather than the communal one. The episode ends with a new blonde character appearing in the forest, hinting at their introduction in the next episode.
Opinions / Analysis
Yuna made a small remark to herself either this episode or last episode, something along the lines of “So this is what it feels like to be a big sister.” I’m actually surprised it took Yuna such a short span of time to warm up to Fina!
Speaking of Yuna, this episode we see a lot more of her snarky and playful personality shine through, especially with her interactions with Rulina! Yuna is actually a pretty likeable and funny character, which is rare in Isekai. I feel as though many Isekai anime protagonists are extremely boring.
However, I’m a bit concerned with where the story is going. In episodes 1 and 2, we got a really interesting glimpse of Yuna’s home life outside of World Fantasy Online; however, this episode, we didn’t get any of that, sadly. I hope that changes, but we’ll see!
Lastly, the mysterious blonde girl shown at the end of the episode! Who is she? Will she simply be another Fina, another young girl that Yuna begins to care for?
Or will she serve some other purpose? Is this a “Found-Family” type of story? What do you all think?
