Episode 5: Bear, Raises a Bird (?)
Episode 5 begins with Yuna hearing about the state of Tirumina, Fina’s mother. She wants her to eat well so that she can recover. Yuna decides that eggs are a good breakfast item for Tirumina to regain strength, but runs into the issue of them being scarce in Crimonia. However, upon checking her own skills, Yuna sees that she’s gained “Bear Gate”, an ability that allows for teleportation.
Yuna is now able to place the Bear Gate down in any two locations and travel freely between the two. She uses this to make quick work of the travel distance between Crimonia and Kai’s village (the boy she saved in Episode 1). Doing this, she gets eggs from the village and brings them home for Fina and her family with relative ease.
While reminiscing about food from home, Yuna goes and buys some meat skewers. She notices a group of children waiting nearby and when she asks the stall worker about them, she learns they’re from a local orphanage and are waiting for food scraps. Yuna buys 30 skewers and allows the children to eat them.
Paying a visit to the orphanage, Yuna does her best by giving them her leftover game meat she’s gained from killing off monsters nearby, as well as making a few temporary fixes to the home, but there isn’t much else she can do. She learns that apparently Lord Cliff, who we met last episode, withdrew funding from the orphanage and left it in dire straits. When she returns home and talks with Fina, she hears that Tirumina is doing well and is now looking for work. This gives Yuna an idea.
Yuna purchases some chickens from Kai as well as an additional plot of land. Building a chicken coop, Yuna gives the chickens to the orphanage. Due to eggs being rarer in Crimonia, Yuna decides that this is a perfect way for the orphanage to earn their own self-sustaining income and sell it to the local townspeople. She also puts Tirumina in charge of overseeing the orphanage’s operation.
However, Yuna is livid by Cliff’s actions. He pays her a visit at her home and asks her a question: in the contract she made with the commerce guild, why did she specifically barr the sale of eggs to the Lord’s family?
Yuna erupts in anger at him, calling him cruel for withdrawing funding, and he tells her he’ll be back to discuss everything later. He does an internal investigation in his mansion and discovers a subordinate that pocketed the funds for the orphanage. He punishes him (showing us a satisfying punch) and pays a visit to the orphanage to formally apologize.
Later that night, Yuna is tired and embarrassed by her actions towards Cliff and lays her head in Fina’s lap. Fina consoles her and Yuna relaxes; and the episode ends here.
Opinions / Analysis
This episode was a miss for me personally. While I like helping orphans as much as the next person, far too much time in this episode was a montage of the orphan kids working on their chickens.
Also, the subordinate that Cliff punches — it reminds me of a few issues with the Bibliophile Princess anime adaptation, where random villains just suddenly appear out of nowhere and are resolved within the same episode. Who is this guy? I mean, I suppose it’s not the worst because at least we see Cliff’s character and get a bit more fleshing out from him.
I suppose one of the good takeaways from this episode is that Yuna now wants to help people by instinct? Like her knee-jerk reaction is to help, even without knowing why they’re suffering? Although, I can’t say for certain that she wasn’t already like that before. Would Episode 2 Yuna do the same thing for the orphan children that Episode 5 Yuna did? I’m not so sure.
I do enjoy this approach to an Isekai story; defeating high-level monsters and clearing towers is all fun and well, but this slower-paced story is also enjoyable! I’m eager to see where it goes, and hopefully I enjoy next episode more.
