Episode 8: Bear, Lays to Waste
Episode 8 of Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear begins with a shocking execution scene. A man is shouting at who is assumed to be the king about using criminals in technological experiments before he is beheaded.
We cut to some more daily life of Yuna in Crimonia’s capital. As they share a pizza, Noire asks if Fina and Misaana can accompany her in the town tomorrow. Yuna sees no reason to disagree, but wonders what she’ll do while the girls are busy. Ellelaura tells Yuna that they can take a tour of the King’s Castle tomorrow to fill up the time.
At the King’s Castle, Yuna is aware that her outfit makes her seem extremely out of place. However, a young girl, Princess Flora, runs up to Yuna and hugs her tightly. Once again, it seems as though a young girl is completely infatuated with Yuna due to her outfit. Yuna then spends the day entertaining this young girl.
Meanwhile, in the town, Noire tells Fina that they’ve created a Bear Fan Club that they want to grow until it reaches 10,000 members. They all get bear fan club cards, and Noire informs them that since they are all members, they must share information about Yuna, Kumayuru and Kumakyuu.
The next day, the girls (except for Misaana and Shia) are all walking through town when they overhear two men discussing that there has been another attack in the Northern forest. Noire grows worried because her father is arriving to the capital today, and Yuna comforts her by saying that she’ll go meet her father halfway so that she can escort him the rest of the way.
Yuna, on her way to see Cliff, encounters upwards of 10,000 monsters in the forest. She assumes that it’ll be a hassle trying to bring Cliff through such a treacherous path, and so she defeats the monsters before going to meet him.
Meanwhile, we cut to the King’s castle, where he is learning about the 10,000 monsters in the forest. He brings in the capital’s Guildmaster, Sanya, to use her magic to scout ahead via a bird familiar. She does this, and spots Yuna destroying all of the monsters, and recounts her endeavors to the king, who is in complete and utter shock at a bear defeating all the enemies.
Ghoulzam, the man we saw in the opening sequence (who didn’t actually get beheaded, apparently, he was just exiled) , appears before Yuna and demands to know who she is and why she’s attacking him. He suspects the King sent her, but she states she’s just a bear passing through. She defeats the remainder of his monsters and punches him out cold before moving on to find Cliff.
When she brings Cliff back to the capital, Ellelaura runs up to Yuna and pulls her to the King’s Castle because he demands to meet her. He praises her for her deeds and Yuna is confused, but begs him not to make it public because she doesn’t want the attention. They inform Yuna that she’s basically saved the capital, and she states she doesn’t want any money or anything like that. As she sees Noire hug Cliff since he’s arrived safely, Yuna notes to herself that seeing the girls smile is more than enough payment.
Opinions / Analysis
This episode is cute, and I did enjoy it, but I can’t help but feel that it’s a bit… redundant? I mean, Yuna quite literally said that exact same line as the end of Episode 4. I don’t want to say that this episode is bad — especially because I quite enjoyed the scene of Yuna cutting back and forth to the King being in shock at stuff she is completely neutral about — but it feels as though nothing was gained this episode.
The scene at the beginning had me a bit hyped because I thought this episode was going to show us something different or new, but it ends up somehow being just the same.
I know that season 2 is on the way — named Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch! — but I’m wondering how on earth they could keep the series going despite this current trend. I’m hoping we get something new in these final four episodes.
