“Wish Upon a Husband” is a delightful dive into the world of romance with a magical twist. Season 1 holds 28 episodes and began publishing in English on April 23rd, 2023. The premise is as quirky as the title: Renea, in a desperate attempt to fix her crumbling marriage, stumbles upon a wish-granting statue. But instead of reigniting the spark with her unfaithful husband (which she does try to do but it ultimately backfires), Edwin, she inadvertently wishes to marry the statue itself! Enter Beldemer, the cursed statue-turned-husband!
Beldemer’s backstory is pretty tragic. Cursed due to his magical experiments, he is now bound to grant wishes. When he becomes Renea’s husband, initially he simply wants to grant her wish and move on. The progression of Beldemer’s feelings for Renea, from confusion to genuine affection, is nicely portrayed. One of the early plot points is that Beldemer assumes that due to them not having their marriage officiated, the wish hasn’t been granted yet. Thus, on their wedding day, in particular, is a turning point in their relationship, filled with emotions that tug at the heartstrings.
On the other hand, Edwin’s character serves as a stark contrast to Beldemer. Accused of infidelity with a maid named Freya, Edwin’s lack of love for Renea becomes painfully evident. This pushes Renea to wish for a divorce, adding another layer of complexity to the story. It seems as though Season 1 is setting up a love triangle, because Edwin is not happy with the divorce, and laments that he thought Renea would only have eyes for him.
The final few episodes are a great read. We all knew Beldemer would find out eventually, but the way in which he finds out and his subsequent actions are written extremely well!
Visually, the manhwa doesn’t break any boundaries but offers a pleasant reading experience. The art style, while somewhat generic, is clean and easy on the eyes. It complements the story well without overshadowing it. The comedic elements, often a hit or miss in many comics, are surprisingly well-executed in “Wish Upon a Husband”. It strikes a good balance, ensuring the humor doesn’t detract from the main storyline.
Verdict: Cute, Silly, Quirky. I like it!
