Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is the official English title of Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu. This is Episode 8 of Part 1 of Season 1.
Last episode was cute, seeing Rudy go out of his way to help Eris succeed — and I was extremely glad he showed restraint and did not touch her while she slept, although I do think that is bare, bare minimum.
This episode, I’m expecting we move the plot along a bit more, probably in regards to that giant thing in the sky Rudy saw alongside Eris’ Grandfather.
So, actually, quite a bit happens this episode. Episode 8 is titled “Turning Point 1”, and they sure weren’t kidding. I’ll try to summarize the first half fairly quickly because most of the “meat” of the episode is in the latter section.
It’s now been 2 years since Eris turned 10, meaning she’s now 12. Rudy’s tenth birthday is rapidly approaching, and that weird thing in the sky has grown bigger.
Eris and the rest of the Greyrat family are planning a large surprise party for Rudy, because they feel guilty they have to hide his identity. We get a small sniff of political turmoil — apparently, Paul has Phillip and an additional brother. The “Greyrats” are broken down into 4 sections. To my understanding, the head of the “Notos” family, which Paul and Rudy are a part of, is Paul’s unnamed 3rd brother. Eris’ Grandfather is the head of the “Boreas” family, which includes the Grandfather, Phillip, and Eris.
I’m unsure what the other two family names are, but so far we’ve got “Notos” and “Boreas”.
Regardless, Eris is helping plan the large surprise party for Rudy. When the day of the party comes, Ghislaine is tasked with keeping Rudy in his room as they prepare. He takes this as an opportunity to see the base of Ghislaine’s tail. To do this, he shows her one of his mini Earth sculptures depicting Ghislaine without her tail, saying he doesn’t understand how it connects, but if she shows him, she can finish it. Ghislaine pulls down her pants and shows him her tail, but Rudy goes to touch her butt, to which he’s fascinated by how hardened her butt-muscles are.
Moving on. At the party, we see that Eris and the family worked hard to get him a staff for his birthday. Rudy is extremely grateful. We also learn why Hilda — Phillip’s wife — disliked Rudy so much. Apparently, when her two sons were born, Phillip’s brother took her sons and forced them to be raised at the main family home, since that is a sort of tradition in the family. Hilda hated Rudy because she felt it was unfair that he got to stay at home, but her sons were forced to leave. Hilda now likes Rudy after hearing that he misses his family, and wants to adopt him, even suggesting that he marry Eris.
Phillip, after the party, offers Eris to Rudy. Rudy tries to play it off, by stating he’s “only 10 years old”, but for some reason these adults don’t seem to understand that concept, and he offers to tie up Eris’ hands and leave her on his bed. Rudy dismisses that offer. When he goes to his bed that night, however, Eris is there, saying she wants to sleep in his room that night. Rudy tells her he’ll make a move on her if she stays, and Eris says “that’s fine if it’s only a little.”
What we get next is super gross, because we’re basically witnessing a 10 year old try to sleep with a 12 year old. And they’re cousins. I’ll spare you the details.
Before Rudy goes too far, Eris punches him again and runs out, but soon returns and says she’ll forgive him. If he waits 5 years and still likes her, she doesn’t mind being with him. Rudy makes a promise to himself to keep himself in check for that amount of time, but can’t help but think about Sylphie back home.
Back home, we see that the sky is turning dark. Aisha and Norn are beginning to grow, and life seems pretty peaceful except for the fact that monsters are starting to show up more and more often. Sylphiette also pays visits to the Greyrat household quite frequently, and Aisha begins to look up to her. But the darkening in the sky is becoming more and more apparent, leading them to worry.
In fact, the darkening in the sky is so apparent that Roxy can see it even from her residence from tutoring a prince’s son.
The next sequence of events is extremely confusing, so bear with me. We see one unnamed man face off with a dragon. The dragon breathes fire on him, and nothing happens. The dragon then screams at the man, and he remains unfazed. The dragon then leaves. The man wonders if somebody is trying to “undo the seal” on the Demon King, hence why the sky is so dark.
Next, we see a child-looking girl laughing and talking to herself, who also seems to be going towards the giant red thing in the sky.
We see 2 more people — one old man, and one man in a white room. The man in the white room claims to be Perugius, one of the men who defeated the Demon King years ago. In addition, he’s written about in fairy tales. Perugius sends one of his men in a mask to go check out the red thing in the sky, and to “kill any suspicious people.”
Unfortunately for Rudy, he’s seemingly extremely suspicious and directly under the giant red thing in the sky. His plan was initially to go to a more desolate area to show off his best magic spell with his new staff, but that quickly goes south with Perugius’ servant appears. Perugius’ servant introduces himself as Almanfi, and Ghislaine tells him that Rudy had nothing to do with it, and introduces herself as a Sword King (basically someone who’s been honored and approved to work for nobles) and Almanfi ceases his attack.
Almanfi leaves and a giant blue ray engulfs the area, including Ghislaine, Rudy and Eris.
Opinions / Analysis
The episode made my skin crawl and I’m so glad we didn’t have to witness Rudy trying to sleep with his cousin. I still can’t get over the fact that it’s his own cousin.
Regardless, I’m happy to see the plot moving along. I’m really excited to see Roxy again, and I suspect she’ll make an appearance here soon! I’m a bit interested in these new characters revealed at the end, but honestly, I’m not that interested. I just wanna see Roxy again, I think.
