A New Mystery
This week’s episode is about the mystery surrounding the previous princess’s demise. In earlier episodes, we found out that the Raven consort is a descendant of the previous dynasty before the current emperor’s father took over. Her mother made her dye her hair to avoid detection by the new emperor’s forces.
The sorcerer gets a name
Not only that, but we also learn that the evil force/individual that possessed one of the palace consorts in an earlier episode, was the grandson of the previous dynasty’s emperor, Lang Bingyue. It is said he was a renowned sorcerer even at a young age, and we can see that, given how easy it was for him to possess the consort in the previous episode.
From this episode, it’s also clear that the emperor has a paranoid streak to him. Only natural given what the previous empress dowager and her cohorts did to him, his mother, and all of his allies. Which, by the way, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of the empress. At her execution in an earlier episode, she muttered some words before she died. Given also that Lang Binyue has suddenly made an appearance, the old empress may have something up her sleeve from beyond the grave.
I feel like the emperor’s paranoia plot was shoehorned in though, as we saw in previous episodes that he already knew she was of the previous dynasty, when he saw her So to up and get paranoid now, three episodes later just seems a bit melodramatic and random. The only good thing to come from his paranoia I would say is an explanation for that bird we see in the opening. Its name is Niao Liang, and it is the source of all the Raven Consort’s power.
True story of the Raven Consort
In the distant past, Niao Liang christened two kings. The Summer King and the Winter King. The summer king became emperor of their kingdom, while the Winter King, a woman, became emperor of theirs. When the Winter King refused to wed the Summer King, he killed her and war broke out. After that, many summer kings would die as they took the throne, while a new Winter king was never chosen. That is until the white-haired general Luan Xi found Niao Liang’s chosen successor and razed the capital to claim it for himself. To avoid war, he placed the successor within the inner palace and gave her the title of Raven consort.
As I said last week, the Melodrama is very reminiscent of a Chinese Drama and the plot twist of JiuJiu getting possessed at the end of the episode makes it a tad more interesting than your usual drama. Overall, Raven of the inner palace episode 6 gets a 5/10
