Binyue was good
What a Heel-turn this was. To find out that the evil serial possessor Binyue was a sad lovelorn victim of the emperor’s father. I’m not sure I can forgive him that easily given what he did to Jiu Jiu but, I will admit that I’m not so devoid of empathy that I can’t feel sorry for him and Minghzu. If anything, it makes me burn with hatred for the emperor and his father more. What the previous dynasty has gone through, including Jusetsu is heartbreaking, and I can find real-world parallels to it. This episode seems to have been counter-productive, in that it’s made me hate the current emperor.
Empress Dowager’s plan revealed
Speaking of the emperor, whoo boy do I have so much to say about him in this episode. First off, I want to say that I’m so glad we finally got to see the result of the Empress dowager’s last words. As suspected, she placed a curse on the emperor for him to never find peace, not even in death. The two ghostly apparitions we’ve been seeing him struggle to find peace with, are his mother and her servant, and their job has been to protect him from Whatever evil the empress had planned to unsheathe upon him. Which, it’s nice this wasn’t some grand overarching scheme, and was just a simple curse, that Shouxu/Jusetsu could solve in a second.
Emperor’s poor promises
Now, on to the problem child. I hated the emperor so much in this episode. He skates over the sins of his predecessor so much! His acknowledgment that what the previous emperor did was atrocious at best. So little he might as well have not even tried to do anything about it. To say nothing of his whole lovey-dovey spiel he tried to pull on Jusetsu after. You’ll love her and keep her close, but won’t make her the Winter King? No! That’s not enough. I understand this show is based on Chinese dramas but that isn’t enough storywise and it feels kinda cheap to just have him say I won’t make you the Winter King but be my friend. It’s patronizing at best, and insulting at worst.
True Power of The Raven Consort.
On the topic of Jusetsu, it was a breath of fresh air to see her full power. The way she banishes Binyue without a second thought and casts out the Queen’s curse is a triumph. I always felt like she was more powerful than she was letting on, but this episode proves that we’ve only scratched the surface of the Raven consort’s abilities. Overall, I’d give this episode a 5/10
