Previously, Fran stubbornly refused to run away after coming face-to-face with a giant horde of goblins by herself in the forest. I hypothesized in my review that perhaps this would become a teaching moment for young Fran, as she is just a 12 year old, and hopefully learn a lesson in when running away is actually acceptable.
Unfortunately, I’m sad to report that I was incorrect.
Fran Knows Best, I Guess
Shisou immediately allows Fran to continue fighting, although the situation seemed pretty dire in the last episode. After encouraging words and a nicely animated fighting sequence, we see Fran next to an impressive pile of goblins; the corpses that she’s accumulated thus far. She finds a goblin nest nearby.
Fran goes back to the city to fix up their armor with Gallus as he informs them that the goblin nest they found is likely a dungeon. Gallus info-dumps on us about dungeons, taking an extremely long time to explain that there’s a Dungeon Master (the “level boss” if you will) and better loot in dungeons.
Fran reports about her findings to the Guildmaster (Klimt) and goes back to her chosen Inn. We get a weird scene of her taking a bath with Shisou, as well as finding out Nell lives in the Inn that Fran has been staying at. We get some more scenes of Nell (♡) and Fran talking.
God of Chaos
Gallus & Nell both speak about the God of Chaos and the God of War this episode, and it’s the first we hear about these deities. Apparently, the God of War turned Evil, and descendants of him make up the goblins and other enemies across the world. The God of Chaos, on the other hand, is who blesses the dungeons and caves with loot.
I hope this doesn’t serve as fluff and genuinely serves a purpose in the anime later on, because I have a sneaking suspicion it won’t play much of a role.
I was excited for the dungeon, because we saw a few familiar faces. I was hoping that Fran may learn a lesson in teamwork, but unfortunately she makes quick work of all the goblins outside in a flashy manner as the other Adventurers behind her stand in shock and awe.
Fran even rushes into the dungeon by herself, claiming she’s gonna kill the Goblin King & Queen on her own, and Shisou does not stop her.
Opinions & Analysis
I’m starting to become a little irritated at the show. Where it has the opportunity for Fran to learn, grow, and mature, it instead opts to – once again – just show off some cool animation and fight scenes. Which are nice, but I’d like something…more.
We see at the end of this episode Fran rushing into the goblin’s nest. I hope that this time, she learns not to jump headfirst into things. She is powerful, but you can’t brute force your way through everything.
Well, you can. But that doesn’t make for an interesting story. Some examples of this “Overpowered Protagonist” trope that I can recall are One Piece and Sword Art Online (which are both good if you like cool fight scenes, but I’m hoping for something more with Fran).
