Episode 5 of Reincarnated as a Sword picks up where Episode 4 left off: Fran is sprinting headfirst into a dungeon by herself after a lot of training and leveling. She claims boldly that she’ll defeat the Goblin King and Queen on her own.
We get a small scene where the rest of the dungeon party chat amongst themselves about how powerful Fran is. They talk about how she’s way above the rest of them in terms of skill, and wonder how on earth she got so powerful while still being so young.
Goblin King & Queen
…Only to find that Shisou’s spells actually killed the King & Queen before Fran even got there.
To make up for it, Shisou promises to make Fran his delicious Curry when they’re done. Fran immediately cheers up and continues to press on to find the dungeon master.
We see that the Dungeon Master is a completely different breed from what we’ve seen before. He speaks and talks trash to Fran when she walks into the boss room.
During the fight, we see he and Fran going head-to-head in a close battle; Fran cannot so much as get a scratch on him at first. Until something way out of left field happens:
He appears behind Fran and slashes off her hands.
Shisou quickly transports himself to Fran’s side and uses a Greater Healing ability to reattach her arms. Fran stumbles with tears in her eyes for a while.
The Dungeon Master remarks that he recognizes Fran’s swordsmanship and agility are greater than his; therefore, he uses a skill to remove them from Fran and give them to himself.
Our episode ends with the Dungeon Master remarking that Fran “will die where she stands.”
Opinions / Analysis
While the first half of this episode was quite slow, I actually pretty much enjoyed the second half. What I wanted to happen in the last few episodes – Fran getting a small taste of defeat and learning when to run away – looks like it may happen this time around. The shock of Fran getting her hands cut off was extremely well done. We hadn’t seen anything like that up until this point, and it’s a good reminder that Fran can still get hurt badly if she isn’t careful. The Dungeon Master appears to be extremely powerful, and with Fran getting some power taken away, I doubt she and Shisou can defeat him on their own.
If the writers make Fran and Shisou use the campy “power of believing in yourself” to defeat this Dungeon Master, I’m going to be extremely disappointed.
