Previously on Reincarnated as a Sword, Fran and Shisou entered the Dungeon Master’s room. The Dungeon Master had summoned a Greater Demon to fight Fran and Shisou, who is unbelievably more powerful than anybody they had been up against before.
He had used a Skill called “Skill Taker” to steal Fran’s Swordsmanship and Agility skills.
The Greater Demon attempts to use the skill, but it doesn’t work. We learn that the skill cannot take “borrowed skills” — skills that Shisou shares with Fran. However, since Shisou is the only Intelligent Weapon that we know of, that means that as things stand, Fran is the only one that the audience knows of that this skill won’t work on.
In addition, Shisou demands that he and Fran run away, as he is confident this Greater Demon is too powerful — but once again Fran is stubborn and Shisou immediately backs down and allows them to stay and fight.
Fran notices that while the Greater Demon is attacking, he notably does not attack anywhere near the Dungeon Master. She and Shisou suspect this is to make sure he does not accidentally do anything that would put the Dungeon Master in danger.
They then plan to attack the Dungeon Master directly with an AoE attack.
After this fire attack, Fran throws Shisou directly at the Dungeon Master; however, he changes his path, tricking the Greater Demon. Instead of hitting the Dungeon Master, he opts instead to go straight for the Demon; hitting him and impaling his crystal.
A Few Gags to Lessen the Tension
Upon defeating the Greater Demon and making quick work of the Dungeon Master, Shisou becomes chipped and pretty much breaks apart. The show cuts to break, and when we return, we see Shisou instantly heal himself and is repaired. It’s played off as a joke — a “gotcha!” moment to the audience.
We get a few cute scenes with Fran and Shisou celebrating their first cleared dungeon. They talk amongst the rest of the group (mostly to Donadrond, the character who initially tested Fran to join the guild in Episode 2) and set out for back home.
At the end of our episode, Fran is reporting her findings to Klimt, who condemns her for running ahead on her own but recognizes her feat in destroying both the Greater Demon and the Dungeon Master. However, he inquires where the jewel inside the Greater Demon went, implying that surely Fran didn’t take it for herself. Fran lies and says that it destroyed itself when she killed the Demon.
An unknown character emerges from the doorway, spouting that Fran is lying and he knows it. A flash of light is seen from his eye, hinting that he has a Skill that allows him to spot lies.
Opinions / Analysis
I’m a bit irritated at the countless “Gotcha!” moments this episode. From the Skill Taker not working on Fran to Shisou not really being broken, I’m starting to wonder how much of this show I’ll continue to enjoy.
Which is a shame! Last episode, I praised the show for its shocking moment of Fran getting her hands cut off. This episode, it seems like Fran has some serious plot armor.
I’ll keep watching for sure, but this episode has to be ranked pretty low on episodes thus far.
