Rent-A-Girlfriend is the English official title of Kanojo, Okarishimasu.
This episode begins with a quick recap of the finale of Season 2, with Kazuya declaring to Chizuru that instead of auditioning over and over, he’ll personally make her a movie to star in if they can crowdfund the money to show her Grandmother before she passes away.
We cut to Kazuya sitting in front of a manager of crowdfunding who tells him that his proposition is severely underthought. He basically gives him a reality-check about how enticing he needs to make the project sound so that other people actually want to pitch in and help. The manager tells him that “nobody will pitch in” a decent sum of money for an actress they know nothing about.
That night, he tells Chizuru about the manager’s worries and she tells him they should take his advice. He asks her if she’s comfortable using her real name as an actress and she says she’s fine with it. They have a few cute back-and-forths before the neighbor on the other side of Kazuya comes out — a new neighbor. She teases them telling them to talk in their own homes if they’re going to be so lovey-dovey.
The next day, Kazuya spots the new neighbor at his college. Turns out she’s a year below him, Yaemori Mini. He’s nervous that she’ll begin blabbering that he and Chizuru are having night-time conversations on the balcony. Meanwhile at his class, his friends talk loudly about him being stuck to his PC 24/7 with a somber look on his face. Mami listens in to this conversation.
Kazuya panics that night when Chizuru asks him if she could come over. He has seemingly no clue why she could possibly want to come over, although she obviously says that she came over to talk about the crowdfunding project. They sit together as he goes through the various costs he’s been writing up, as well as the total they should be seeking to crowdfund. Chizuru seems pretty impressed at his seriousness about all of this.
Kazuya, as they talk, brings up the fact that it would probably be great for Chizuru to talk about Grandma Sayuri and her dream on the project proposal, to tug at heartstrings and let others know how much it means to her. Kazuya says he doesn’t want to talk about it because it’s so personal, but Chizuru says it’s all right if it helps. This surprises Kazuya, since she’s being so open and willing about her desires.
As a thank-you to his work that night, Chizuru says she’ll make him dinner that night. Kazuya blushes and immediately starts overthinking about “Chizuru’s home cooking”. She tells him he has nothing in his fridge, so she goes to get basic things like milk and eggs from her apartment. He loves the food she prepares, and the two have a heartfelt moment of Kazuya saying he can pitch in some of his savings to their project if they need to.
The episode ends here.
Opinions / Analysis
For a first-episode, it wasn’t so bad! If you’ve seen Rent-A-Girlfriend before, you’ll know that Kazuya has a “main girl” he spends each episode with. It’s usually Chizuru, since that’s obviously the girl that the author wants him to end up with. Season premieres and finales are usually with Chizuru.
This episode was no different, but it was nice seeing Kazuya actually be serious about something for once.
