Chaos reigns everywhere. In Aomori Prefecture, multiple house fires occurred simultaneously, in Yamanashi Prefecture has been a major blackout, and in Okayama Prefecture occurred an explosion that resulted in three deaths and 28 injured.
At the Iga mansion, Reiha tells Ittoki that they need to complete the procedures to officially make him Chief, following Yumika’s death. Tokisada has custody of Kousetsu and is hearing what she has to say about the murder of Ittoki’s mother, but it’s nearly certain that she will be deemed responsible for the death, and Ittoki will have to decide her punishment. As Ittoki looks at the floor, there is still a blood stain, and memories from his mother’s last moments swarm into his head.
This is all too much for Ittoki, he just lost his mother and has to officially take her place as Chief, his best friend was the perpetrator of the murder and he has to decide her punishment. All of this while a war is happening.
At a train station sits Suzaku, when a mysterious man sits on the opposite bench from him and tells him that it’s best for him to not go back to Koga for now, as Kidou intends to kill anyone who does not conform to his vision. For that same reason was Suzaku’s father killed, after he suggested abandoning the plans for armed suppression and going against Kidou’s ideas.
Suzaku is blinded by Kishinmaru’s death, always blaming it on Iga and using it as an excuse to want Iga to be crushed, even if it means that there will be losses on Koga’s side. This line of thought makes Suzaku even believe that his father was murdered because he was a coward, instead of recognizing that his actions were for a better future for the village and Suzaku.
There but Not There
At the ceremony, we see an Ittoki who isn’t really there, zoned out thinking about his memories with his mother while he signs his fingerprint on the scroll with the names of the Iga Chiefs. Kozo tells him that he needs to take the next steps and strong measures, as Iga villagers express their wishes to avenge Yumika. One villager asks about Kousetsu and suggests that if she doesn’t have information on Koga, she should be executed immediately, a statement that shocks Ittoki even though Kousetsu was responsible for his mother’s death.
Shione meets with Tokisada and tells him that Genji Karajishi is in confinement, and NSC founder Juzen Jiraibou is serving s provisional head of the organization. Shione hands him a report on Karajishi’s connection to Koga, as well as data from a certain register Karajishi had, data that ends up being about Kousetsu. Seeing as the picture on the report seems to be of a younger-looking Kousetsu, we can maybe speculate about the Koga clan thinking about using her against Iga for a while.
Tokisada allows Ittoki to go see Kousetsu, who is tied up not because Tokisada fears she would run away, but because she would take her own life if she wasn’t. He asks her to tell him what happened once again, and she describes that a bell rang inside her head and after that, she only remembers small fragments. The next thing Kousetsu sees is Yumika covered in blood on the floor. These memories make Kousetsu break out crying and beg to be killed as she has no reason to live.
Always Yumika’s daughter
Tokisada tells them that he now knows what has happened to her. Koga was developing a technology to control others through a microchip implanted in the brain, the same thing happened to Satomi Tsubaki, the girl with red hair who tried to kill Ittoki in the first episode that we saw and reviewed.
As both Ittoki and Kousetsu are confused as to why she would have a microchip implanted in her brain, Tokisada further tells them that Kidou was implanting chips in children he had with mistresses and sending them to other villages, creating unwitting spies. Kousetsu is Kidou’s child, and Tokisada had known this piece of information long ago and so did Yumika, but she didn’t care and always refused to abandon Kousetsu. Iga welcomes all who come and pursues none who leave.
Kidou talks through the phone with the one responsible for the death of Yumika, the one controlling Kousetsu. The motive for the murder was that Yumika refused to reveal the secret Core’s location and Kousetsu’s brainwashing wore off, so he had to make the call. Kidou tells the person that in the end, “Project C1” produced fine results for a defective product. The mysterious person also tells him about the state of the Iga, although Ittoki is officially Chief, it remains in a state of confusion. Who is the spy that knows what is going on inside the Iga? Could it be Kirei once again?
Kirei is back home, and ready to give her report on the month she was infiltrated into the Iga clan when she is ambushed by ninjas. When we think that she will be the next one to die at either the hands of the ninja or the man she was initially talking to and she thought had sold her out, he helps her escape and explodes the house with himself and the ninjas inside.
At Yumika’s funeral, the entire village attends, but at the end of the day, Ittoki is the only one who still stands in the room, refusing to leave his mother. Suddenly an unexpected person comes to pay respects to Yumika, Suzaku, who tells him that there is no Iga or Koga when it’s time to mourn the departed. He takes this moment to ask Ittoki how it feels to have his parent killed and calls him a coward, starting a fight between the two that ends up in Ittoki letting out his emotions and talking about the pain he feels even after hitting Suzaku
On the back of a picture of Suzaku and his father, he finds an SD Card that contains three videos. Playing the first one, he sees a security camera’s footage of Kidou and Kishinmaru in a parking lot. Kishinmaru asks Kidou why he made something so dreadful and tells him the path he’s taking will only lead to destruction and ruin. Even though Kidou claims that his ideal is the same as his, a world at peace with no need for ninjas, Kidou wants to kill all ninjas and have the country ruled from the shadows by himself and the Asuras. Because Kishinmaru doesn’t agree with it and sees it as a dictatorship rather than peace, Kidou blinded by rage and jealousy has an unknown ninja kill his brother.
Kidou sends over a letter to Iga, telling them to hand over the secret Ninja Core and vacate Iga village without condition. Mr.Kozo tells him that before this declaration of war, they can’t be spineless and he needs to harden his resolve. Ittoki asks him for a moment to calm down, as this isn’t a decision that can be made on a whim since it involves the lives of many. The villagers don’t seem to understand it and they compare Ittoki to his mother and urge him to take action right away.
Ittoki visits his mother and talks about how he has been feeling, how he moved past the temptation for revenge against Koga, and how all he wants is to protect what his mother also wanted to protect. While he talks, his uncle is standing nearby and Ittoki asks him to help him accomplish the things he wants.
Kidou being Kousetsu’s biological father has been the biggest plot twist for me so far! I was already expecting that Kidou was the one responsible for Kishinmaru’s death, but I didn’t know that he held so many grudges against his brother because of the way they were raised differently.
It was nice to have some closure on Tsubaki’s death, rather than just have her suddenly die in the prison cell with no explanation for it or her actions.
I wonder who was controlling Kousetsu and how she will deal with all of this now, since Yumika really was a mother to her and, even if she was being controlled, she was the one who took the knife to her throat.
