“Weak Hero” also known under the alternative title “Yakhan Yeong-ung” is a Manhwa that has been a good read since its initial publication on May 5, 2018. Brought to fruition by of RAZEN (Art) and Seopass (Story), the series forays into the genres of action and drama, set against a school backdrop, serialized on the platform of Naver Webtoon.
In the hostile environment of Eunjang High School, weaker students live in perpetual fear of becoming victims of rampant bullying. However, their fortunes are about to shift when a skinny, unassuming freshman named Gray Yeon, barely 157 cm tall, stands up to a bully twice his size, overpowering him to the astonishment of all. His act of bravery coupled with his resourcefulness and unique insights earns him the nickname, Eunjang’s White Mamba. Despite his stature, Gray continues to challenge bigger, stronger bullies from other high schools, hoping to break this cycle of torment.
Firstly, on the positive side, the character development in ‘Weak Hero’ is truly commendable. Each character, regardless of their significance, is imbued with a distinct personality and a rich backstory. The series does an exceptional job of exploring their histories, offering a deeper understanding of the universe it has crafted.
The protagonist, Gray, particularly stands out with his unique approach to battles. Rather than relying solely on brute force, Gray employs a blend of wit, strategy, and resourcefulness, resulting in some incredibly satisfying and well-drawn fight sequences. Gray’s unique, grounded, yet creative fighting style is definitely a highlight of this high school drama.
The art style is competent, devoid of unnecessary flamboyance, but solid and visually pleasing.
However, there are some downsides. The major concern being the lack of sufficient spotlight on Gray, especially as the series progresses. The side characters may be well fleshed out, but their fights lack the creativity and charisma Gray brings to the table. As a result, many of these sequences start feeling repetitive, just a cycle of the same punches until someone drops.
In summary, ‘Weak Hero’ is an engaging read, boasting of a well-crafted character universe and an intriguing protagonist. However, it does falter in maintaining a balance between the main character’s screen time and side character development. If you’re seeking a series where the protagonist stays at the heart of the action, ‘Weak Hero’ might occasionally disappoint you. Nonetheless, the series does an exceptional job in the character development department, making it worth exploring for that aspect alone.
Verdict: It is a good read but if you’re looking for a series with lots of screen time with the main protagonist, this series will be a bit irritating
