After Jonas’s betrayal in Episode 3 of Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, I was anxiously waiting for Episode 4. And it didn’t disappoint! Sugar Apple Fairy Tale is a fast-paced anime that attracts viewers. Honestly, if it were slow-paced then, I would have lost interest.
Anyway, in the latest episode, we see more of our favorite sugar artisan, Anne, and how her relationship with Shall has changed over the course of her journey through the Bloody Highway. And it brings the Silver Sugar Exhibition to an interesting conclusion too.
The Aftermath

After Jonas’s betrayal and his stealing Anne’s piece for the exhibition, Anne’s heartbroken and very emotional. She takes it out on Shall and then returns his wing to him since her journey has ended here for her.
When Shall takes the wing and seemingly leaves, Anne starts full-on crying about why her mother left her alone. Anne’s only 15 and her mother was her world, and after her death, she wasn’t able to grieve her death and felt very alone. So, when Shall leaves, it hits her so hard.
Eventually, she cries herself to sleep and wakes up in the morning. Feeling hungry, Anne finds some wild berries and before she can pick out one, her gaze causes a fairy to form there. The cute little fairy introduces herself and Shall appears too.

He warns the fairy to stay away from humans because they enslave fairies and she takes his advice and flies off. Then, he gives Anne a shirt to change out of her bloodied clothes.
Shall Consoles Anne
Anne asks him why he hasn’t left, and he tells her that he wants to be friends with her because she’s different. And she still hasn’t fulfilled her promise to him to make him sugar confections. With renewed vigor and hope, Anne goes into her carriage to make a sugar confection for Shall that is beautiful.
Fueling her feelings into work, Anne makes an original piece, featured after the fairy she met in the berries bush. Shall accepts it and suddenly takes Anne out for a ride. He’s taking her to Lewiston to enter her piece in the exhibition.
Silver Sugar Master Exhibition

Despite traveling through the night, they barely make it, and even then Anne is only able to enter because Hugh helps them. Hugh is the current silver sugar viscount, surprise surprise. I knew he was someone important but the this was a real surprise.
He got Anne into the exhibition, and she given a station alongside Jonas, who can’t help but taunt Anne even though he was the one who betrayed her. The exhibition carries on, and it was a smaller affair than I expected – there were only a handful of entries.
The King chooses Anne and Jonas’s piece and while he likes Anne piece, it small and the Queen comments that the exhibition piece should be big and spectacular. So he goes with Jonas’s piece. Anne is very sad that she lost to the piece that she made.
The Truth is Revealed

But, tables turn when Mithril comes out of the Jonas’s third sugar barrel. He’s eaten all the sugar, and spins up a story of Jonas being a crappy sugar maker and etc.
Jonas gets angry, and points at Anne that she’s Mithril master, and at Mithril’s prompt, she tells them about Jonas’s treachery. They get into a huge fight and this was the highlight of the episode for me. Anne doesn’t back down and Hugh advices that settle this with a small competition.
Jonas’s bigger piece contains butterflies and whoever can make similar-looking ones wins. Jonas is afraid and right he should be, he doesn’t know how to make butterflies. In just one look, Hugh and the other can see that Anne made the butterflies, and not Jonas.
But, Hugh comments that Anne’s butterflies now are different, and the King catches on it. Anne was able to overcome her fears and create an original butterfly that was even more beautiful. The King declares that no medal will be awarded this year, and the Queen encourages Anne to participate next year.
Shall’s Promise

After the exhibition ends, Anne gives Shall the sugar confections she made, and he refuses to accept it. He says he wants a sweet that won her a medal, and promise to wait with her until the next Silver Sugar Confection Exhibition.
Anne is overjoyed and we see just how much Shall values and trusts her because he initiated the friendship and has decided to stay with her even though she’s not his master anymore, and he even allowed her to touch his wing in this episode. This was the highlight of the episode, especially when Shall lightly kissed her hand in a gentlementaly manner.
Looking Forward to More…
The exhibition arc of the anime has ended but it’s only episode 4 and I can’t wait to see what adventures await Anne and her fairy companions. The art style is great and I can’t get enough of the story!
