A lesser known Ghibli film to many, this film follows Haru, a 17 year old schoolgirl. When Haru prevents an unaware cat from getting run over, she is invited to marry the cat by the Cat King to repay her. The film features the song “Kaze ni Naru”, one of my all time favourite themes featured in a Ghibli film. A few of the characters are returning characters from the 1995 Studio Ghibli film “Whisper Of The Heart.”
The Cat In Danger

As Haru Yoshioka makes her daily commute to school, she finds a strange cat crossing the road carrying a parcel in its mouth. The cat is oblivious to the oncoming truck about to take its life. That is until Haru swoops in and saves it, reaching the other side of the road in safety. The cat verbally thanks Haru for her actions, then quickly runs away stating that he’s in a hurry. Haru, still shocked by being in the presence of a talking cat, sits on the side of the road surprised by the encounter.
To The Cat Kingdom

The cat who Haru saved turned out to be the Prince of the Cat Kingdom, Lune. Haru is forced into a marriage with him by the Cat King to thank and repay her for what she did. Haru meets The Baron – a charming cat who first appeared to be a statue, Muta – a particularly large white cat who is overly sensitive about his weight, and Toto – a blackbird. The three of them chase after Haru to rescue her after she is kidnapped by the cats of the Cat Kingdom, who exist in an entirely different world!
The Escape

After a turn of events in the Cat Kingdom, The Baron, Muta and Haru are on their way to the top of the tallest tower in the Kingdom to return to their world. They reach the top, jump, and are returned to the ground safely by Toto. The contrast between the Cat Kingdom and the real world is really cool. Supernatural themes are at play in the Cat Kingdom, such as being slowly transformed into a cat the longer you stay there.
