After nearly a decade, The Devil is a Part-Timer! is finally returning for another season. The anime is based on a light novel by Satoshi Wagahara. Its second season will be animated by Studio 3Hz and started airing last July 14, 2022.
Once again, we get to see the life of Overlord Sadao as he tries to adjust to human life. Since it has been almost a decade since the first season, you might need a refresher before watching season 2. With that, here is everything you need to know before watching the second season of The Devil is a Part-Timer!.
To start off, let us reminisce about the characters of the story. The series has a nice set of characters that work well together on-screen. Let’s go through them one by one, shall we? Here are the main characters of The Devil is a Part-Timer!
Sadao Maou is the main character of the series. He was deemed as “Overlord Satan” in a world called Ente Isla. As the overlord, he can tap into his demon magic to gain extraordinary abilities. However, after getting transported to the human world – his magic has become limited. He can only refill his power when he absorbs the negative emotions of humans. Still, he chooses not to cause any harm to the human world. According to him, he has taken a liking to his life on Earth. Hence, Sadao now mainly draws his attention to his part-time job at MgRonald’s.
Hero Emilia, also known as Emi Yusa, is the main female protagonist who defeated Overlord Satan in Ente Isla. She was born half human, half angel since she is the child of an archangel. Because of that, she was separated from her father to train as a hero at a young age. With her holy power and sacred sword, she forced Overlord Satan to retreat – transporting them to modern-day Japan. However, Emi wanted to finish the job, so she followed them through their portal. Now living in Japan, she took a job as a call center agent to blend in with the humans. Despite that, she still keeps an eye on Sadao and ensures that he is not scheming anything evil.
Chiho Sasaki is a regular human who works with Sadao at MgRonald’s. She is known for having a crush on Sadao. Throughout the series, she is vocal about her feelings for him and gets easily jealous whenever she thinks a woman is interested in Sadao. Still, she is a cute and generous girl who cares a lot for the other characters. She became so close with them that they entrusted her with their true identities. Despite the dangers of being with her Ente Isla friends, she still chooses to be with them.
Shiro Ashiya, also known as Alciel, is one of Satan’s Demon Generals. He was with Sadao when they first arrived in Japan. Same with the overlord, he also lost most of his powers. Furthermore, he is roommates with Sadao, and he handles most of the household duties at their home. Still, Sadao makes him run errands every now and then. One of his main tasks is to search for a way to get back home with Sadao. Other than that, Ashiya is a loyal subordinate who is willing to help Sadao at all times.
Better known as Lucifer, Hanzo Urushihara is another one of Satan’s Demon Generals. He was defeated by Hero Emilia in Ente Isla before being saved by Olba Meyer. After making a deal with Olba, they teamed up in an attempt to kill Sadao. However, their efforts were in vain since Sadao defeated them. After their fight, he moved in with Sadao and Ashiya. It was then when he became a shut-in, mainly browsing his laptop all day, and impulsively spending their savings.
Suzuno Kamazuki, also known as Crestia Bell, is the Chief of the Doctrinal Corrections Council of Ente Isla. She is known for wearing traditional Japanese clothes instead of normal ones. Suzuno moved in next door – making her Sadao’s neighbor. When she moved in, she proceeded to help Sadao and his roommates with several household chores. Despite her innocent facade, she was an assassin back in Ente Isla. Suzuno was an executioner who used a giant mallet to slay her targets.
The series starts off at Ente Isla with Hero Emilia defeating Overlord Satan and Alciel. Forced to retreat, Satan opened a gateway to modern-day Japan. Together with Alciel, they realize that they lost most of their magic when they set foot on Earth. While finding a way to regain their powers and get back home, they lived their lives as Sadao Maou and Shiro Ashiya. The overlord is now working part-time at MgRonald’s with Chiho Sasaki.
On a rainy day, while on his way to work – Sadao stumbled upon a woman with no umbrella. Sadao decided to give his umbrella to her before rushing to MgRonald’s. He later finds out that the woman is Hero Emilia, who is currently using the name Emi Yusa. It turns out that Emi followed them to Japan to kill the overlord once and for all. However, after seeing no evil intentions and having limited powers – Emi decides to hold off on killing Sadao.
During a meet-up, Sadao and Emi were both attacked by an unknown assailant. It was revealed later on that Demon General Lucifer was the attacker. He was conspiring with Olba Meyer, an archbishop of Ente Isla, to kill Sadao. When they confronted each other, Sadao had to utilize the fear of humans to regain his strength. Using his demon magic, Sadao was able to defeat Lucifer and Olba. Having witnessed the battle, this was when Chiho found out their true identities. Afterward, Lucifer used the alias Hanzo Urushihara and moved in with Sadao.
Later on, a girl named Suzuno Kamazuki moved in next door. At first glance, Suzuno was a helpful neighbor who helped Ashiya with his duties. Little do they know that she was tasked by the Church to spy and assassinate Sadao. Suzuno was working with an angel named Sariel to kill Sadao and Emi. However, Suzuno was starting to have doubts after spending time with Sadao. She saw that Sadao had no evil intentions whatsoever and that he had a good heart. Still, Suzuno helped Sariel to kidnap Emi and Chiho. Desperate to save his co-worker, Sadao rushes to their aid.
Before reaching them, Sariel asked Suzuno to do him a favor – to kill Sadao. Still conflicted, Suzuno proceeds to battle a magicless Sadao. Despite this, Sadao refused to fight back – fully taking the hits of Suzuno’s mallet. Sadao revealed that he knew her identity right from the start, and yet, he did not push her away. Convinced that he was no longer the evil overlord – Suzuno had a change of heart.
Sadao proceeded to fight Sariel while Suzuno protected Chiho. During their fight, Sariel was causing all sorts of destruction – leading the people to panic. Sadao utilized this and absorbed their fear to gain more power. With his regained magic, Sadao summoned his demonic sword and defeated Sariel in one blow.
The series ended with Sadao walking through the rain. During this, Emi spotted him and decided to return a favor. She gave Sadao an umbrella, just like he did at the start of the season. Grateful, Sadao thanked Emi – to which she replied with a smile.
