This episode begins with Sajou being told by his classmate (and friend of Aika) Kei that since he was always pursuing Aika so intensely, nobody else really got close to her. We see her awkwardly sitting in her desk by herself. Sajou decides he’s going to support her from afar.
As he leaves and thinks more about Aika, he realizes that she probably only generally stuck around with him because otherwise she’d be completely alone in the class. As he thinks this, Shinomiya — a senpai of his — stops him in the hallway and asks if Sajou frightened her kouhai the other day. Her kouhai was a girl that Sajou ran into the other day as she was holding a bunch of papers she thankfully didn’t drop. Sajou says yes and apologizes to Shinomiya, but she wants to ask him a few questions. The conversation changes to Shinomiya’s position on the council and they talk about responsibility for awhile. Overall it’s a very boring conversation. At the end of it, he gives her a fake name, “Yamazaki” — the name of a friend of his.
If you’ll recall, Sajou has an older sister. On the way to school the next day, he’s carrying some stationary supplies for her. When they spot Aika walking to school, Sajou’s sister takes the supplies and tells him to have a proper talk with her. However, Sajou and Aika just walk in an awkward silence to school together.
When he arrives, he discovers an angry Shinomiya in his classroom alongside Yuyu Inatomi, the girl Sajou frightened by accident. Shinomiya spots Sajou and confronts him about the fake name, saying she’ll be waiting for him in the guidance room during lunch. His real friend Yamazaki confronts him about using his name and we realize that Sajou did it because Shinomiya is attractive to Yamazaki, so Sajou was trying to help him get noticed by her.
Sajou is forced to subtly explain this to Shinomiya during his meeting with her later. Inatomi also apologizes to Sajou and says she’ll work on being insecure and frightened easily of men. It’s a strange scene. When Sajou returns to the classroom, we see Aika surrounded by girls eagerly talking with her, and Sajou is happy to see it. His sister texts him, telling him to come to a workroom.
Kaede, his sister and member of the student council, tells him that they’re short on hands and need help. He does some busy work, like copying and printing, winning the favor of most of the student council members. His sister bargains with him to come help again tomorrow morning.
We get a small scene of Shinoyami and Inatomi talking. Inatomi is worried about whether she should’ve said to Sajou that she’s trying to overcome her insecurities and fear of men. It seems like she’s still a bit worried about how she presents herself to people, and is worried Sajou didn’t understand because he looked upset when she said that. Shinomiya reassures her that it’s fine.
Back at the classroom, a group of classmates are planning on going to Aika’s house that weekend. Sajou, although he’s invited, says he won’t be attending. Aika goes to him in the hallway and tries asking if/why he won’t come, but they’re interrupted by Shinomiya, who asks to borrow Sajou for a bit.
They talk about Inatomi. Shinomiya tells him that Inatomi is a bit sad that she wasn’t able to properly convey herself to Sajou, but Sajou insists he fully understood. He says that he was disappointed because if Inatomi really wanted to use the incident with Sajou as motivation to better herself, then apologizing to him should’ve been done without Shinomiya present. He says that Inatomi should’ve come up with the courage to do it on her own instead of relying on Shinomiya’s presence.
Shinomiya praises him, and the episode ends.
Opinions / Analysis
Okay, I really dislike our main character and I even more dislike that those around him are encouraging this annoying behavior. Firstly, who the hell is Sajou to try and belittle Inatomi’s progress? Let’s talk about Inatomi’s situation for a second.
Inatomi is frightened of men. We don’t exactly know why, but the anime is treating her as if it’s completely without cause or reason. Nobody just randomly is frightened of the other gender, that sort of behavior is taught either through traumatic experiences or bad conversations. So first and foremost, I don’t like how the anime is treating Inatomi’s behavior.
That doesn’t excuse Inatomi’s behavior. In the incident with Sajou, she insulted him after he frightened her and ran away. That’s not cool and she should definitely apologize — but her apology isn’t good enough for Sajou. In fact, he thinks she’s weak or something for using Shinomiya’s presence. What the hell? She did something wrong, so she should apologize. It’s not Sajou’s right to be so picky about the apology that Inatomi is able to provide. This is a first for her, judging her so harshly is so disrespectful.
This is the second time Sajou has disrespected girls, the first episode he was really rude to Rena Aizawa, the girl who was just using him to get back at her ex, by saying that her reason for breaking up with him was silly and “all guys are like that”. Speak for yourself, dude.
This guy seems like what reddit mods or incels wish they could be. Overly-analytical of women and thinking very highly of themselves.
I absolutely hate this dude. Just be normal. The only good thing he’s done is step away from Aika, because what he was doing was straight-up harassment — all of this judgmental crap towards other girls, I could do without.
