It’s Tomo-chan’s Birthday!
On their way to school, Jun gives Tomo a pair of sunglasses as a birthday present. While Tomo teases about how she is older than him now, Jun begins to sigh as he thinks about how she says the same thing every year. In the school classroom, Tomo talks to Misuzu about what happened with Jun. As she talks about how she can call her “onee-chan,” Misuzu starts to think about the same thing Jun previously thought about.
She later gives Tomo a present and Carol suddenly comes in and drops a block of gold on Tomo-chan’s desk. While Tomo feels that the gift is a little too much, Misuzu asks if Carol is interested in putting her wealth to use. The two then invite Tomo to hang out at Misuzu’s house that weekend. As Tomo is shocked that they are going to give her such a big transformation, Carol replies that she says it as if she is not a girl.
Is that Tomo-chan?
After Misuzu and Carol dress her up, Tomo insists on going to the store and buying ice cream for everyone. Thinking that they were going to come with her, Tomo walks into the store frustrated when suddenly everyone starts to stare at her like lost puppies. While Tomo tries to brush it off, she then sees Jun at the store. Because of this, she tries to hurry up and grab the items and leave the store. She suddenly trips and falls on the ground causing Jun to help her out. Tomo later asks Jun to walk with her for a while.
During this, Jun begins to question if the girl is Tomo, but does not realize that the girl is so. As the two are walking, they stop to watch kids playing soccer. While watching the game, Jun asks what Tomo thinks will happen in the future to the two best friends that are playing. Since Tomo responds that she believes they might get into a relationship with one another, Jun begins to explain how things aren’t the same between him and his best friend. Tomo later rushes home as she realizes that the ice cream is melting.
When Tomo arrives back at Misuzu’s house, she sees the two putting up decorations to celebrate Tomo’s birthday. As the group enjoys cake, Tomo describes what happened with Jun and admits that she got happy when he said that she looked pretty. The next morning Jun decides to pinch Tomo-chan’s cheeks to make sure Tomo was actually herself.
The Extreme Game of Dodgeball
While Tomo was playing dodgeball, the other girls ran away in fear after she attempted to hit them with a super hard throw. On the other hand, Misuzu explains to Carol how Tomo always gets super serious before an athletic event. For this reason, the coach then places Tomo on the boys’ dodgeball team for the tournament. As the game begins, Jun and Tomo bring fear upon other teams as they show their aura before each match. During a mini break, a boy runs to the duo and explains how the strongest kid in school, Goma Takeru-senpai, will be their opponent in the final round.
As the time comes for the ultimate battle, Goma proposes a deal to let Jun join the judo club if he defeats the opposing team. While the match continues, Tomo attempts to hit Goma out as he eliminates her teammates. This causes Takeru-senpai to strike back and hit Tomo out of the game when Jun suddenly blocks the hit. Super upset that Jun is eliminated, Tomo-chan throws a special dodgeball pass that leads her to victory.
What is Your Motivation?
After Tomo receives her trophy, she talks with Misuzu and Carol about how she wishes she and Jun could continue to goof together. We later see Goma questioning why he loses to Jun in judo when he does karate. He later acknowledges how Jun never used karate in any of their matches and questions why he doesn’t join any clubs. While Jun walks with Tomo back home, he thinks to himself that he wishes to be like her since she is so strong-willed.
This episode shows more of an idea of what Tomo looks like in Jun’s eyes and vice versa. I feel as if many can see where Jun is coming from as he sees Tomo as someone he wants to surpass. Although, it would have been great to see more of Tomo and Jun’s matches. Overall, this was a fun episode with a lot of humor, authenticity, and a little bit more characterization. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the duo’s relationship grow more and more.
