No matter how tense the anime gets, it’s impossible to frown when cheerful girls come on screen! They are often short-haired and crazy characters who come off as silly or even selfish, but they can be the opposite of that!
Here are some shows you shouldn’t miss if you like energetic anime girls or need encouragement from cute female characters.
6. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006)
On their first day of school, Kyon is introduced to a grumpy girl who claims to have no interest in ordinary humans. Only the supernatural is worthy of Haruhi Suzumiya’s time and energy, so she starts her own club: the SOS Brigade.
The group is supposed to search for aliens, time travelers, and espers — but Haruhi herself can be stranger than any other phenomenon.
Haruhi is energetic but frustrated that the world feels so dull. She’s an obstinate and bossy girl who isn’t afraid of playing dirty to get what she wants. Gradually, as her friends in the SOS Brigade work hard to encourage Haruhi to spend her energy and to keep her entertained, her attitude improves a lot as she spends more time with people. She lets go of her selfish attitude a little and starts worrying more about her friends.
To add to the overall eccentricity of this show, the episodes were aired in a different order than initially planned. As a result, there are two exciting ways of watching this anime: the chronological order and the broadcast one.
The peculiar princess Anisphia Wynn Palletia once lived on Earth. She was reincarnated as a princess in a fantasy world, and thanks to her modern mindset and determination, she made significant changes in her kingdom.
Anisphia was born unable to use magic but determined to change her fate. While attempting to fly, she accidentally falls into a crowded ballroom where her younger brother just broke off his engagement with the magical genius Euphyllia Magenta.
Judging by the princess’s reckless behavior, one could believe she would be too airheaded to understand how serious the situation was but she didn’t need to hear a single word to see the great problem the prince created. More than simply observant, she is thoughtful, clever, and has a strong sense of justice.
Princess Anisphia immediately saved Euphyllia from that vexing situation, and already had in mind the perfect plan to restore the genius lady’s stained reputation and simultaneously get a talented assistant for her studies on magic. Anisphia brought about great inventions and made bold decisions for the prosperity of her kingdom.
4. Angelic Layer (2001)
People who love collecting anime merchandise, especially anime figures, will enjoy seeing these adorable dolls in action from CLAMP!
In Angelic Layer, a popular hobby in Japan is to buy and customize dolls called angels and engage in battles. These battles occur in unique arenas known as Layers, allowing dolls to be controlled through a mental device. Misaki Suzuhara, the series protagonist, learns about the game when she moves to Tokyo and instantly wants to be part of it.
Among the main characters, Tamayo Kizaki stands out most for her perkiness. She is an athletic thirteen-year-old girl skilled in several martial arts and never seems to get tired!
Tamayo doesn’t have an angel but is a big fan of the dolls and the competition. She is always cheering for her friends with encouragement. And she doesn’t hesitate to let her energy out, constantly attacking her childhood friend, Kotaro. Her moves also inspire Misaki when she needs an effective offensive strategy!
3. K-On! (2009)
K-On is a fun and wholesome comedy about the girls of Sakuragaoka High School Light Music Club. The music club initially has three girl members; Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, and Tsumugi Kotobuki. Ritsu, the drummer and president of the club, is a natural leader and develops a plan to advertise the club around the school. Ritsu is tough, playful, and probably forgetful too. She is always encouraging her team!
The club was saved from ending when Yui Hirasawa joined, as it now met the minimum number of members set by the school. With Ritsu leading the club, the members experience several adventures together, allowing them to create bonds with each other. These experiences were not only related to the band; other activities also helped them become closer.
Ritsu is daring and confident, even if that can sometimes put her and the other girls in trouble. Her top priorities are having fun and staying with her friends, and she doesn’t mind spending energy with them. On the other hand, when it comes to activities that require discipline, such as studying, she is often lazy and either asks for help or counts on luck to get good grades. She might be tomboyish and childish with her attitude and some crazy ideas, but she knows when to stay focused and motivate others.
2. Gatchaman Crowds (2013)
Gatchaman Crowds occurred in 2015 when alien beings known as MESS threatened humanity. To fight them, a group of unique individuals was secretly recruited to protect Tachikawa City with their special abilities. They are the Gatchaman Crew!
The protagonist, Hajime Ichinose, is a sixteen-year-old girl and the last one to join the G-Crew. She’s optimistic, impulsive, insightful, and attentive to important details others fail to notice. The other members saw her as troublesome at first, but her easygoing personality and strong will inspired them.
1. Lycoris Recoil (2022)
Lycoris Recoil was one of the greatest hits of 2022! In this show, Japanese citizens feel safe due to the country’s meager crime rate. Their security is granted thanks to a secret group of young female agents called Lycoris.
After disobeying orders, one of the best Lycoris, Takina Inoue, is sent to partner with and learn from none other than the agency’s “problem child”— the cheerful Chisato Nishigiki — in the Café LycoReco!
Chisato is a legend among the lycoris due to her insane skills but she chose to work independently at the cafe, helping locals with their day-to-day activities most of the time. She is merciful, caring, and optimistic. The type who looks silly and absent-minded, but is, in fact, rather wise for her age.
You can find these energetic female characters or genki girls in every anime genre. They usually add valuable lessons to the show, such as enjoying life to its fullest and keeping your chin up no matter how difficult things get!
