The beginning of the infamous webtoon! All Seonghye can remember is sirens in the distance. She wakes up in a room with 3 unknown girls all dressed in the same clothing, and one extremely creepy looking woman…
Here’s the synopsis, given by Webtoon:
Seonghye wakes up in a room she does not recognize, surrounded by women she does not know. It is a torturous, malevolent prison, ironically called the Pureum Welfare Center. With no memory of how she got there, and using nothing but her wits, Seonghye must overcome hostile social dynamics, unknown dangers, and her own psychological roadblocks to rediscover her past and free herself from the Welfare Center.
The series debut takes no time to waste and immediately puts us in the middle of confusion. All Seonghye can recall is the sound of sirens. When she awakes, she’s surrounded by 3 other girls whom she doesn’t recognize, who are all dressed in the same pink uniform.
They call for Gyeongja, an extremely creepy looking woman, to come see that Seonghye has awoken.
Seonghye begins to panic, causing Gyeongja to forcefully shove a pill down her throat — which we’re later told is a sedative. When Seonghye awakes, she’s told that she came to this location willingly, and that she’s been here for three months.
One of the girls even laments that she “never helps” clean up around the place, either.
Our episode ends with Gyeongja creepily eyeing Seonghye as she begins to spiral, wondering what on earth has happened to her.
Opinions / Analysis
Obviously, the series is setting up Gyeongja to be some sort of villain, and our visual cues are telling us that she knows much more that Seonghye does about her appearance at this location…wherever we are.
For a first episode, it is extremely well paced! The entire episode takes place within the same room, and really spans only about one conversation; and yet, we have a lot of hints.
- Seonghye allegedly came here willingly.
- Seonghye must have previously been awake within the three months she’s stayed at this facility. Else, why would the other girls complain that she doesn’t help clean up? They must have seen her lucid, awake, etc.
- Gyeongja knows more than she’s letting on.
- All of the girls here (and so far, we’ve only seen girls) wear the same uniform.
Now the only question we don’t have any hints as to yet, is what happened to Seonghye before arriving here? Was there some sort of accident? Some sort of suicide attempt, perhaps? What does Seonghye remember?
I have a feeling this will be the focus of our next episode as we start to piece everything together!
