“Tower of God“, or “Sin-ui Tap“, a Manhwa series that has been published since July 5, 2010. The story and art of this Action, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, and Mystery series are the work of a single creator, SIU. It’s a widely recognized piece on Naver Webtoon, and while it has its merits, it also has some problematic elements that may affect its overall charm.
The series revolves around a protagonist named Twenty-Fifth Bam who has known nothing but solitude until he meets Rachel. However, Rachel has an ambition—to climb the Tower, and she’s prepared to leave Bam behind to achieve her goal. When she disappears, Bam commits to ascending the Tower to find her again.
But the Tower isn’t a welcoming place. It’s full of fearsome monsters, cryptic secrets, and treacherous individuals. Each floor is overseen by an Administrator who devises grueling tests for those daring to ascend. Bam, identified as an ‘Irregular’, someone unchosen but still able to enter the Tower—an extraordinary event—remains undeterred. All desires, be it wealth, power, glory, or even reuniting with Rachel, are promised to be fulfilled at the top of the Tower.
Starting with the positive because I have a LOT of “critique” to go through. This Manhwa is definitely one of the most influential manhwas of all time. It’s definitely one of the first series that kickstarted webtoons as a medium into popularity which means that it also has a lot of originality in everything that it does. At least at the beginning of its publishing.
This series is also very good at building tension before big fights and are also very unique and well-drawn. If you’re an avid reader of this series, it would be difficult to forget the few memorable characters within the story.
Unfortunately, that’s all the positive things I have to say and with all honesty, I genuinely dislike this series to the point where I couldn’t keep reading it anymore around 300 chapters in and I’m gonna tell you all about it.
First, the story is all over the place. There’s never a clear theme within the story and anything that is portrayed within the story never feels consistent with other parts of the story. I am not exaggerating when I say I do not remember about 90 percent of the story of this manhwa that I read.
This series absolutely HATES its main protagonist, Bam. The thing about this series is that it’s an action series and it does have a main protagonist but this manhwa almost feels like it’s allergic to ever giving Bam the spotlight as the main protagonist. MANY TIMES Bam would be doing whatever the hell the author puts him up to when something important is going on elsewhere.
And the author LOVES to create build-up to Bam’s fights but along the way, it almost feels like the author is just dragging the story out just for the sake of building tension. It almost felt like it was intentional with how frustrating it became just waiting for Bam to actually do something important. And more often than not, at least during the first season and the second season, the fights aren’t even worth it.
Despite how long this series has been published, it still doesn’t look that great. I said earlier that you can clearly observe the improvements in the author’s art style, but I recently went back to check the latest chapter and it was so disappointing. The fights still feel lame and the art style has not improved at all after I dropped it off.
All the characters’ personality is mostly cliched and boring. And there is only really one character that stands out but solely because it’s such an awful character that is Rachel. Rachel is Bam’s only friend at the beginning of the story and she’s the reason why Bam is in the tower. A little spoiler ahead but it turns out she’s a little shit. The author makes that VERY clear that she’s an awful person.
The author writes Rachel to be the most annoying, entitled, unreasonable, and irritating character I’ve ever read. The author makes it a point to make her annoy readers as much as possible and then let her off to be annoying again on later occasions. She’s overstayed her welcome as a hateable character and at this point, I just hope the author finally does something useful with her and stops writing Bam to be such a goddamn doormat
I’ve already said this but the fights are atrociously boring. It’s samey all the time and it never feels cool or unique.
Verdict: This series is a waste of time and I hate it.
