Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is the official English localized title of Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto. More accurately, it translates to “100 things I want to do before I become a zombie.”
This episode begins with Akira having a nightmare about his past job. When he awakes, he’s happy to remember that he doesn’t have to go to work anymore. He decides to delightfully have a ‘slack-off day’, drinking beer all day in his room. He cracks open a can of beer and happily chugs it down, but is horrified to see that it was his last one. Now, he must go on a beer run.
As he climbs down his apartment building via a pipe, he sees “The Kosakas” — two people in the next apartment building over, who are petrified at the zombies closing in on them from outside. Akira says he’s going to the convenience store and asks if they need anything. They nervously tell him some things they could use and he says he’ll go get them.
We see a few scenes of Akira on his bike going to the convenience store accompanying some narration about how he’d rather be a zombie then not enjoy himself. When he arrives at the convenience store, he spots a girl getting some water from inside. He’s embarrassed, as he was singing some song about beer, and tries to make idle talk with her. He asks her for contact info and she refuses.
She doesn’t seem very interested and tells him that going through all that trouble for non-essential items doesn’t seem like a good use of his time. A car crashes through the convenience store, and the two flee in separate directions. Akira’s bike was ruined in the crash, so he runs around a bit before locating a Moped Scooter. Along the way, he upgrades to a motorcycle.
When he climbs back up the pole to Mr and Mrs. Kosaka’s apartment, he’s shocked to find that they’ve been raided by zombies. In his own apartment, he solemnly continues his list of 100 things he wants to do before becoming a zombie.
We see the girl’s POV that he met in the convenience store. She’s focused solely on survival and not much else — in her spare time, she runs on a treadmill to keep her cardio up, takes protein powder and watches zombie films for research rather than enjoyment. She even begins to chart the running types from the walking types of zombies, and discovers that a few zombies can run and jump — seemingly, semi-smarter than others.
After the convenience store run, this girl — Shizuka — remembers that Akira was super happy over something so trivial like beer, and laments that perhaps she should’ve grabbed some mochi, a snack, while she was at the convenience store.
Opinions / Analysis
Aaah, I see what they’re doing!! Akira and Shizuka are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Akira is forcing himself to only see the enjoyable parts of life, meanwhile Shizuka is refusing to do anything that doesn’t increase her chances of survival. We’ll likely see throughout this series how it takes both to create one cohesive unit.
Minor spoiler, since I’ve read the manga: I’m waiting for Kentarou, Akira’s friend, to appear! I love their dynamic and I can’t wait for it to be depicted on screen!
