Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is the official English localized title of Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto. More accurately, it translates to “100 things I want to do before I become a zombie.”
This episode begins with Akira and Kencho discussing Akira’s list and eating a meal that Kencho cooked. Akira says he wants to meet the girl of his dreams and get a girlfriend, and Kencho wishes him luck, although now that the world is zombified that seems like a tall order. We see that one of Akira’s list items is “Wine and Dine with Flight Attendants.” Another requires a large, flatscreen TV.
They agree to go to Ikeburkuro to search for people and a TV. Along the way, they’re cornered by a fire on one side and an oncoming truck driven by a zombie on the other. To avoid the truck, Akira rides his motorcycle into an underground subway.
When they encounter zombies down there too, they ditch the bike and find themselves in a store attached to the tunnel where four survivors are residing – 3 women, and 1 man.
They all begin to scavenge the local shop for food, and begin eating together. As they talk, it turns out that these three girls are flight attendants, and this is sort of like a mixer. Akira and Kencho are super excited to hear this, and try to make the most of this situation.
Although the middle-aged man beside them is so shell-shocked he can only mumble pessimistic things like “we’re all going to die”, we get a funny scene of Kencho and one of the flight attendants flirting and Akira doing his best to talk to one of them.
Eventually, Kencho is sleeping with one of the girls and Akira is vomiting from drinking too much alcohol, with one of the flight attendants — a shy girl — comforting him. As they’re separated, we see that one of the flight attendants is with the middle-aged man, and is heavily drunk. The middle-aged man is shown to be concealing a nasty Zombie bite, and soon turns.
He kills the flight attendant he’s with, who screams loudly, alerting Kencho and the woman he’s sleeping with. They go to investigate, where his ‘partner’ nearly immediately dies.
We see a heartfelt moment between Akira and the shy flight attendant as they talk about their past. Akira talks about how he did nothing at his company but fight for survival. They talk about how their ‘past dreams’ — the girl working as a flight attendant, and Akira working at a production company. Akira laments that his dream was just a borrowed one, and it wasn’t what he really wanted to do. Maki tells him that being a flight attendant was truly her dream.
The girl gets attacked from behind by a zombie. We get a really sad scene of her telling Akira to leave her behind after their heartfelt encounter. He escapes to Kencho, who is holding a TV, saying that amidst the chaos he grabbed one. They escape on the motorcycle together. Back on a rooftop they’ve mad sort of a ‘base’, Akira writes in his notebook that he wants to remember is childhood dream.
Opinions / Analysis
I quite enjoyed this episode! I’d never seen fart comedy in an anime before, and it was definitely welcome in the first few opening sequences.
I feel a bit though that the ‘point’ of the anime — about living your dreams, and not caring what others tell you — is getting a bit… boring at this point? Like I get it. I totally understand. Yup yup yup.
Maybe I’m just losing a little patience, though! Overall the episode was fantastic and I enjoyed it.
