Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is the official English localized title of Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto. More accurately, it translates to “100 things I want to do before I become a zombie.”
We begin this series with Akira dreaming of a childhood memory. He’s helping a young kid from his cat being picked on.
When he awakes, we hear news that the military is actually somewhat useful in this story, how unusual: they’ve quarantined Hokkaido Prefecture, and so Akira is pleasantly surprised to hear that his family may be safe in Gunma (a town in Hokkaido).
Akira shows Kencho something about zombies, or maybe a superhero (it’s not very clear) on a laptop before they head out to a local aquarium. As they walk by, we see inside one of the tanks houses an insane zombified shark, but both Akira and Kencho don’t seem all that surprised by it.
Regardless, they go to a back room where Akira finds a jacket or suit of some kind and uses spray-paint on it. We see a really sad scene of a group of survivors being overwhelmed by zombies outside, and one of the young girls hurts herself while running away. Akira in a really silly suit — calling himself “Akiraiger” — comes to her aid.
We learn that his suit is a “shark suit”, meant to withstand extreme bites from animals like sharks and crocodiles. As he ushers in a group of survivors, he notices that one of them is the girl he met in prior episodes — our girl Shizuka.
Inside, he gets a glimpse of Shizuka’s personality — a bit argumentative and rude — as she declines to give him her contact information again. When they hear a huge crash, Akira and Kencho go to investigate, finding the crazy shark from before that’s merged with the zombies it’s eaten and now walks on six legs.
As they escape, the girl that Akira rescued earlier is now completely panicking and her brain is likely turning into mush from fear, because she pushes Shizuka out of the way to save herself, causing Shizuka to be left behind and fending against the shark. Akira swoops in to save the day.
We get a really cool animated sequence that deviates a bit from the stereotypical style as they try and carry out their plan of electrifying the shark to kill it. Kencho even makes an appearance trying to distract the shark, waving his bare ass around again.
After they’ve successfully escaped, Shizuka doesn’t want to travel along with Akira and Kencho still, but after hearing Akira tell her that she’s important so he’d try to rescue her again (even if he isn’t pretending to be a superhero), she gets flustered and eventually gives him her LINE ID. This is important because up until now, Shizuka is obsessed with things that’ll only bring her closer to survival, and she has no real reason for staying connected with Akira; but she does this because she wants to, and that’s reason enough. Akira is already rubbing off on her!
Opinions / Analysis
This has gotta be my favorite episode so far! The sheer fear and absurdity of a walking zombie shark is fantastic and fits extremely well with this bizarre world.
We know that Shizuka’s gonna come up again, right? Like it’s very obvious.
Also, I like that this episode sort of closed the book on last episode’s discussion of “childhood dreams” — that one flight attendant and Kencho both having realized their dreams. “Being a Superhero” is such an Akira-type thing to want to be, and it’s very cute and admirable that he’s trying to follow through on that!
What do you all think of this episode? We’re almost at the halfway point of the series!
